Default 1/16 end mill

Iím trying to cut through 1/2 inch MDF for some cutouts but my 1/8 EM is to large in some areas and Iím losing some detail. Where Can I find 1/16 end mills with a 1/4 inch shank that are capable of cutting through 1/2 inch MDF. Thanks for any advice.

If you find some, buy a lot, because they'll probably break just looking at them.

It's best to have the cutters in mind while you are designing the product. Be sure that internal radii can be cut by the bits you have available. Then you won't run in to this situation. One of those lessons learned along the way.

Maybe a tapered end mill would do the job? You can get some tapered end mills with insanely small tips that are less prone to breakage.

Why make the small 1/16th bit do all the work? Break the strategy up and do the bulk of the cutting with the 1/8Ē bit and then a detail clean up with the 1/16th ?

I break up tooling all the time to get as good of machining time as possible and reduce breakage.

Iím cutting designs from the MDF that require it to be cut all the way through the MDF. Looking to preserve as much detail hence the smaller bend mill.

I have used 1/16 inch dual flute straight bits from time to time to cut scroll saw patterns. The bits I have will cut 1/4 inch deep max. I haven't broken a cutter yet but I never cut more than 0.050 per pass at once and I feed maybe 50 IPM.
