Art, generally the rain will keep it washed off, but on occasion, they should give it a shot with the garden hose because it is beside a gravel road, albeit one with very little traffic .... There's nothing on here that won't last 10 years.
Doug, my posts are band-sawn Eastern white cedar. You could use cypress, I suppose, although cypress in the ground doesn't perform as well as cedar. The "band-sawn" texture is an advantage ..... any waterbased stain will stick to that like snot to a baby blanket.
The backing boards the sign is mounted too are band-sawn cedar as well.
Thanks T.R.

Interesting thing happened last year. I had to refurbish a sign prematurely due to one shot paint not lasting very long. When I dug up the sign posts (which were cypress and sort of an experiment anyways to see how they last) One 4x4 post was perfect and the other was half rotten after 3 years. Both from the same lot of wood.

They were replaced with nice toxic pressure treated posts.

Yes, you never know Doug. Here, cedar that grows in a swamp lasts much longer than highland cedar.
As for 1-Shot .... I've had sinus infections outlast that crap.

Ain't that the truth!
Nice looking sign Rodger!
I'm still planning a trip south sometime this summer so may get to see it in person. I just hope you won't force me to drink any of that single malt!!!!!
