Default Mcgrew replacing spoil board

Ok, it has been a year and a half,, my 1" thick mdf spoilboard has finally seen its day, Actually it would have done a bit more but the plugs and repairs would not hold up any further.

I will document the process as I do this

so we start by setting Z on top of the spoil board and cut .1 into it per pass to remove it when we started it was approx. .25 thick

Removed debris this AM

Located and machined first side of new board used yellow MDF as Brownish is denser with adhesives and binders yellow breathes better.

machined to .04 (To remove slick top coat) Guys were amazed at how much VAC it had with the slick on !)

Bit used is a 1.25" mortise bit that is now 5 years old and cost 35.00

machine using Z on top of board at 15k rpm 400 IPM 40% stepover (I like a nice Board, No Need to hurry) Never understood buying a 200 + bit unless machine is 6k #

Once done flipped New board so fresh cut side down (wipe and blow off dust on machined side) before we did this I use guys to help as it is a lot of Glue dots and perimeter and I like glue fresh !!

flip and locate board, Make sure all is lined up for correct XY or it is stuck for time to come !! turn on vac ,, I wait 30-45 min for adhesion and then machine second side always setting Z to new top of board not Bottom.

Once done I calibrate to top of new board set XY and measure all tool after setting Z zero at top of spoil board,, from there I make all files using z zero on top of spoil board and only use top of materials when depth from top (vcarving Etc.) is an issue

Jim,

Is there any reason why you don't have your plenum area sealed/painted? Just wondering if it makes a difference. I painted mine when I first cut the grid as I didn't want to have one more thing moving around. I screw mine down with plastic screws around the perimeter. I just replaced my SB and I also added gasket to the plenum that really helped.

Thought about it,, We are in a 400 sheet run and time to get going again was a factor,,

I have a phenolic slab ready and may just go that way next time

You ought to post this at the top of the owner forum - every new owner seems to ask the questions you have concisely illustrated as a process.
