Default Inlay of carved oak panel in Medex (mdf)

Hi guys,

It's been a long time since I have posted here, trying to do too many things at once I guess.

I have a question concerning the use of dissimilar woods in larger inlays.

I am doing a fireplace mantel and trim for my house and I am using materials that I have left over from previous jobs - Oak boards, Poplar and 3/4" Medex.

I know that Oak can expand due to moisture across the grain by as much as 1/4" per foot (a pretty hefty expansion rate) and Medex hardly expands at all.

The question is, what happens when you glue an Oak board (56" x 9-1/5") into an inlay pocket in Medex? Will it act as a single panel since it is tightly glued or will they react independently?

I want to use the Medex as the base for the carving just under the mantel shelf and the pretty Oak piece will serve to dress up the panel. All the other trim will be poplar.

Will the Medex constrain the oak growth or will the oak expansion damage the Medex - that is the question.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be really appreciated - this aint my are of expertise or experience and I know how many clever and experienced folks there are on this board!

Thanks!

Terry

My thought is...... If the climate in your home is maintained year round then the movement would be minimal. I would go for it!! But then if it failed in my own house I would try again with something different!!!
Just my 2 cents and that ain't much!
