Default 4 zones

Hey Charlie,

Thanks for the input. Some what you're describing -- different zones and more Maple inserts -- is/was in my v5 design. Not sure why I thought v6, the one you reviewed, was better, I'll attach v5. Yes, this means I've been pondering spoil board design way too much/long!

The just-in-case clamp: will think about that. More alignment pins: This is probably one of those more-is-better cases, within reason, so I'll look at that too.

I just bought a Stinger II 48X48 with phinolic top and vacuum from David Mar through this forum.

Charlie, I like the setup you had on your machine when it was new. How well did it work out using T-tracks and vacuum? you mentioned you used clamps with vac. Is that typical? I really need to be able to use both..

I have used Russel's inserts on my Stinger I and they work great! But, I have to know where my clamps are needed and that changes on every job.

I put MDF on top of the tracks and cut grooves for the tracks. I use them more than the vacuum. I only use the vacuum to hold down sheet goods and most of my cutting is smaller work that I clamp. It works very well. I like that the tracks are not one long track but many short clamps. The MDF helps hold the tracks down because the groove is smaller than the track body.
However, I would seriously consider making a grid of Russell's inserts. Maybe a 5 inch square pattern. Using wood clamps that are 9 inches long you could easily reach most work pieces.

Thank you all for this information. It will help me decide what method to use.

charlie,
Did you glue your spoil board to the Plenum?
I like how Russel has an area removable to put fixtures so I was thinking of using pins to align the spoilboard and make them removable. I realize his plenum is aluminum and that method might not work on phanolic.

I have another question for using vacuum on phenolic top. The plenum on the machine was machined into 2 inch squares by Camaster. Hurricane vac was installed by Camaster as well. Do I need any closed cell foam gasket material in the grooves?
