The link below is for a scanning system that uses an Xbox Kinect and it allows you to free lance around the part which can be quite large. My son's friend put this together for the animation industry, but there's no reason we couldn't expand it to our world. I think it's around $300.00 for the software. Click on the "See How It Works" button.

Using the example of the girl in the description of how it works, will it pick up the pores of her skin?... or a loose thread on her clothing? If the Kinect can handle that kind of resolution, then I'm in. If it can't, then perhaps there's another handheld scanner than CAN handle high resolution, and then we'd just have to see if it's affordable. As is, though, this is really a no-brainer for a lot of architectural possibilities.

I have a little handheld laser scanner with a resolution of less than 1/1000" (1 micron -will pick up full fingerprint and every pore on your finger). But it's useless for anything larger than a finger or toy car, etc. and it's only $160,000! Use it for scanning teeth to carve out porcelain crowns and fillings. As yet, I haven't got the software key to be able to export the 3D objects in a useful format (.stl).

Good point, Russell, and you illustrate the other end of two extremes.
What I have in mind is a scanner that would scan objects in the range of between something the size of a pack of cigarettes and with decent resolution, and then larger and larger objects with selectively less resolution as the object gets bigger. I sense that the economical technology is out there ($160,000! Yikes!), but it'll take some sleuthing to put it all together in one system.

Mark, you can down load 3 or 4 sample 3d scans if you follow the link above.
I got the girl in stl format and took it into Aspire and fiddled with it. it was OK definitely not a very close scan and it had holes in it. But there may be something to this!!!! The small statue may be a good indicator of how good a smaller scan can be....? |

The leaves and grapes totally disappear by the time the scan is done. So yes, something to keep an eye on, but not something to quite yet dive in to do anything with it commercially.

Sounds good but Working with Artec Studio gave me the best results with Kinect.
