Default 3D scanning with Microsoft Kinect

Since the prices of 3D scanners are still sky-high and it looks like won't go down in the near future, I want to share a way to 3D scan simple objects at home using the XBOX Kinect (in case anyone doesn't know about this).

The resulting 3D scans can be imported into any 3D modeling/CAD software.
Any low-budget 3D sensor (Asus Xtion or Intel RealSense) can be used instead of Kinect. Skanect software can be swapped for the trial version of Artec Studio 13 or ReconstructMe for higher quality scans.
