If you are going to be painting it, simple de-waxed shellac is a good option for sealing, either directly or for the "seal and recut" technique that has been offered up. A cut edge on MDF can be pretty absorbent!

I will see if I can find some HDF.

HDF is used for doors on cabinets, sometimes called door grade . it has more inherent binders, it may come with a melamine on one side or not.

I buy mone from Roys wood products. generally a commercial cabinet distributor

where are you and i will see if i can find a supplier

Default Trick

One way to advise a better mdf finish is soak the mdf before cutting with shellac or a good sealer. Thank you to my mentor Michael Mezalick. This trick has made a big difference in all of my mdf projects.

Try using a electric tooth brush for sanding detail

How about those jewelry sanding daisy wheels that go on a dremel tool?

I have used the HDF like Jim McGrew suggested, It works great. HD and Lowes typically don't carry that so I buy from lumber supplier and ask for "Plum Creek".
