I have an old-fashioned pencil (not clutch pencil type), which I stick behind my ear when I work. A habit which I picked up from my Dad, who picked bit up from his Dad. People laugh at me, but at least I always know where my pencil is. I sharpen it with a pen knife, and a piece of old sandpaper, so it looks the part.
I have 4 tape measures around the workshop, bit they are never where I think I left it. I usually have one on my belt.
Love the idea of GPS tracking, though...

I tried to solve the problem of wandering tape measures by leaving 5 tapes strategically located throughout my shop - Just as often as not, this results in 5 lost tapes, each and every one found as soon as I don't need them.

Do as I have done and epoxy a sheet of plywood to the clothing clip, Yeah, they're hard to get in your pocket, but much easier to find.

I even tried buying them in bright colors thinking that would help...

Nope! Still can't find one when I need it!

A scientific study was performed several years ago regarding tape measures.

Three identical tape measures were each placed in a separate 55 gallon drum (with nothing else). The lids were welded on.

The drums were locked in a secure, alarmed, guarded facility for 1 week.

At the end of the week, the drums were removed and opened.

1 drum contained no tape
1 drum contained a broken tape
1 drum contained two tapes (one of which was not one of the tapes purchased)

Hilarious post! Thanks for this...made my day.

I'm with Tristan...I wear my pencil behind my ear so I always know where it is. Then...during supper or while watching TV, my wife laughs at me and points at my ear where I forgot the pencil. :)

I too have multiple tapes and they're never where I claim to have left them. More funny looks from the Missus.

Mitch, I have that issue with the hearing protection I sometimes throw on when I'm using my J/P or the router table. I forget the band is around my neck and invariably, it's on one of those days when we decide to do a quick meal out somewhere rather than me cooking as normal. I'm sure lots of folks are "amused" by that...in addition to Professor Dr. SWMBO.

So funny,

I just got done rounding a bunch of mine up... It seems every time I'm at the hardware store, I buy another "cheapo" because I can never find them. I could not find a single one this morning.. When all was said and done, I liberated all of these from My wife's tool collection in the house.....

I hope your response to the wife over this tragedy was a "measured" one...
