Default Workbench

Less than half the work I do is done on my cnc. I use the best tool for the job, which sometimes turns out to be a hand plane, dovetail saw, chisel, rasp, spokeshave, etc. To use these tools, a good workbench is a necessity. I finally decided it was time to replace my old wobbly workbench with something solid. So I bought hardware from BenchCrafted and built myself a solid bench out of hard maple and purple heart (just happened to have a bunch in storage in my cold shop).

Glide vise on one side, tail vise on the end, and a high vise that slips down into the tail vise slot and locks in place with the tail vise. The bench dogs have little springs to keep them at any height I set them at. I made one for each hole (they tuck down flush with the surface and it keeps stuff from falling through the holes). The sliding deadman can be used with dowels or holdfasts along with the glide vise to hold large panels.

Of course, I did use my Cobra for a lot of the construction, and to put an inlay on the side of the 4.5" thick top!

That's awesome. I think I'm doing good on building something and then I see the stuff on this forum and remember I'm woefully inept.

Beautiful bench Russell. I wish I would have incorporated a sliding deadman when I built my bench.

Awesome, Russell. If I had a workbench like that, I'd have to retire. It would be a shame to have paint spilled on it. I might make one for the bedroom though. It'll be safe in there, because nothing messy happens in there anymore .........
