Or is it perhaps a loose belt? The z is ball screw though and looks direct drive?

Try these steps:
Set a dial indicator on the top of the Z plate
Using a 1 by 2, pry up to see if there is play.
If there is, check the angular contact bearing retainer nut and the coupler
If not, set the z by the normal method with the plate. Use a new clean bit. Do not move the X or Y
type in Z0 to move bit to the Spoilboard
where is the bit in relation to the surface?
I use a .010 brass feeler gauge and move up till it moves thru with lite resistance, Z DRO should read .010
If its not, I adjust the plate thickness in the macro
I then repeat with a different bit as they all don't read the same

Once you get consistent results with T1, adjust T2 and T3 don't forget to use the 1 by 2 on them also

If I find any play with the dial gauge what is the procedure for adjusting the angular contact bearing retainer nut? Are these anti backlash opposite of each other? There is no adjustment I assume and that what I would expect is they need to be snugged up to the Plate?

Loosen the set screw, tighten nut, tighten set screw. That simple
