Default Wood species ?

Happy new years to all.

Came into possession of this thing, really a nice piece of work and am trying to determine wood species. It is a hardwood, I am leaning towards mahogany. Appears to be hand carved from 1 solid chunk. Is about 34x8", heavy and solid.

We have some similar pieces and it's not easy to determine original species exactly. A lot of the craftspeople who make/made these things just used whatever was locally available to them. Mahogany or similar is great for carving, however.

I don't know what that is, but I'm pretty sure it's not Mahogany. Maybe Sapele?(but that looks more like Mahogany - more open grained.)

We build Mahogany caskets occasionally and definitely not Mahogany.
