Default It's nice to be right!

This has absolutely nothing to do with CNC, but I think it's worth sharing.

A local golf course has been closed for a few years, since the original owner developed Alzheimers. It finally sold, & I got to make the new signage. With the new owner's assistance, I installed 3 directional billboards & 2 entrance signs on a 3-post mount this past weekend.

So, Monday morning, he gets a call from an irate neighbour. She says the one upgraded billboard ( all were put on the existing structures) was on her property, that she purchased 3 years ago, & she wanted $500/year for it to stay there. Because of the disrepair of the old billboard, she hadn't bothered pressing this issue before. So, the new owner calls me to see what I thought of all this.

Well, this was once a provincial highway, but was given to the municipality a couple of decades ago. Provincial highways all had a minimum 120' right of way, & the sign appeared to be well within that right-of-way, & I guessed that it was now township property, & told him who to call.

Well, I was correct ( got to like that) .... the big shot from the roads department came, measured it all up, & there's no issue with where the sign is located. So, she's not getting her $500, & since she certainly didn't make a good first impression, it's unlikely she'll ever get anything but a cold shoulder from him, since she wasn't particularly pleasant with him on the phone.

You have to love it when arseholes get snubbed .....

Here's one of the signs. I wish I could have talked him into dimensional ...

Wow, how to let everybody know you're an idiot in 3 seconds or less.

$500 a year? Is there such a thing as petty extortion...

JP, that's not an outrageous price for a billboard location, but the value is directly proportional to the traffic count. A buddy of mine gets $2700/year for his site on the Trans- Canada Hwy about 1100 miles west of here. There are only so many sites available, & he has to pay the province an annual fee. But, it's located where people who live in Manitoba who own cottages in Ontario have basically no choice but to drive by it . And, since seasonal & weekend residences rarely get mail delivered there, it's by far the best way to advertise to these people. So, even at $2700 / year, it's good value where it stands.

But, the billboard in question, on the former Hwy 506, is probably worth $150/year.

I pay my neighbour $100/year for my little billboard. There's between 300 & 1000 vehicles passing daily, & it doesn't generate many sales, but you never know who's going to drive by, see that & say "WOW .... I want one of those!"

I was thinking $500 a year was crazy cheap for a golf course and not worth the trouble.
You would think that a recently purchased property would have been surveyed and have the boundaries marked.

It may have been surveyed years ago, & still be fine , JP. What she obviously didn't realize was that this road was formerly a provincial highway & hence, the 120' right of way. Most roads here are 40' ROW, although concession roads are 66'.
I've dealt with this for years, but most people wouldn't know .
